I am happy to be teaming up with Kacie Lynn of Fiber Farm www.Fiberfarm.net and Aaron Sanders Head  www.AaronSandersHead.com to offer you a two-day immersion in the art of indigo dyeing and slow stitching. We have collaborated on this effort to provide a beautiful and relaxing environment for you to learn about these textile traditions, whether you are experienced or an absolute beginner. Located on top of Monteagle Mountain in Tracy City, TN, Fiber Farm is a working example of a vertically integrated micro-textile operation. Local food maven Paige Thompson will provide all meals. When you sign up for the retreat, you will have the opportunity to let us know if you have any dietary restrictions, we’ll make sure that there is something delicious for you at every meal.

The retreat will begin on Saturday morning, June 23rd at Fiber Farm, and conclude at 5pm on Sunday, June 24th. You will learn how to create a ferrous indigo vat, as we share our recipes and tips for making and maintaining a balanced indigo vat. Kacie will have pots of locally foraged plant-based dyes on hand to experiment with, as we conjure up color combinations for our stitching project. Aaron and Nadene will be teaching you various methods of creating resist patterns on your dyed fabric using traditional Japanese shibori techniques of binding, stitching and clamping. You will have time to experiment with different fabrics and patterns, as you prepare your fabric and develop ideas for your stitching project, which may include stitching a small wall hanging, quilting a potholder, embroidering a patch to mend your jeans, or hand stitching a small pouch. Aaron and Nadene will show you some hand stitching techniques, including sashiko, embroidery, mending and simple construction. The dye pots will be available to use on Sunday, but our focus will be on creating a small project using indigo and other plant-dyed fabric and hand stitching.
