Nadene Mairesse is a designer living in Florence, Alabama. She is the owner and designer of Idyllwilde, a clothing collection that brings together local textile artists, quilters, sewers and weavers to produce modern, limited-edition garments for women and children.
Originally from Los Angeles, California, Nadene worked as a Children’s and Junior Sportswear designer from 1990 until 2003. Looking for ways to apply her design skills more broadly, and inspired by the work of architect Samuel Mockbee at the Rural Studio, a program at Auburn University’s School of Architecture, Nadene moved to Auburn, Alabama to study Architecture. In 2004 she participated in the Rural Studio program, working with Second Year students to design and build a house for Willie Bell and Ben Harris in Mason’s Bend, Alabama.
After receiving her degree in 2008, Nadene pursued her interest in collaborative and alternative design practices as an Intern Architect at the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio in Biloxi, Mississippi. Here she provided architectural design and community planning services to low income communities recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
With her new design project, Idyllwilde, Nadene is returning to design at a small scale. She will be collaborating with skilled members of her community to produce durable, beautifully crafted, modern clothing.
